Whether you’re a first-time mom or a seasoned pro near Laguna Hills or OC breastfeeding can feel harder than expected and that’s exactly why lactation consultants matter. These experts bring calm to the chaos and help you understand what’s really going on when feeding feels confusing, painful, or just plain overwhelming.
Today, I’m sharing an interview with Ashley Shapiro, a highly respected lactation consultant based in Laguna Hills who works with families all over Orange County. Ashley supports new moms through all kinds of feeding challenges from latching pain and low milk supply to bottle refusal and babies who just seem unsettled at the breast.
She shares:
- When to reach out for support (hint: don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed)
- What a personalized consult actually looks like
- And how to make feeding decisions that feel aligned, not stressful
If breastfeeding hasn’t felt as “natural” as you expected, this one’s for you.
Why does breastfeeding feel so much harder than I expected?
Most families come to me because something just feels off. Common issues I see include latching discomfort, nipple pain, slow weight gain, milk supply worries, oversupply, bottle refusal, or babies who seem fussy at the breast.
It’s not just you feeding is a skill, and sometimes, your body and your baby need some support learning how to work together.
What actually happens during a lactation consult?
Every session starts with your story. I want to know what’s working, what’s not, and how you’re feeling. Then I do a full assessment of latch, oral function, weight trends, feeding patterns, and more.
The support is hands-on, personalized, and education-based. I’ll help you understand why something is happening and walk you through exactly what to do next no generic advice, just what fits your baby and your lifestyle.

When is the right time to ask for breastfeeding help?
If feeding feels confusing, painful, or like it’s taking over your whole day, that’s the right time to reach out.
Some families meet with me during pregnancy to feel prepared ahead of time. Others call in those first few days home when something doesn’t feel right. And many reach out later when pumping, bottle feeding, or returning to work creates new challenges.
There’s no wrong time. You don’t have to wait until you’re overwhelmed to get support.
I’m in pain or worried about my supply……. is that normal?
Pain is never something you just have to “push through.” And low milk supply is usually a sign that something else needs adjusting.
I always look at the root cause: latch mechanics, feeding frequency, tension in baby’s body, oral function, and even pump settings if you’re using one. Once we know what’s going on, we build a gentle, doable plan that supports your goals.

What if I’m not doing exclusive breastfeeding?
That’s completely okay and more common than you might think.
Some families supplement with formula, use donor milk, or do a mix of breast and bottle feeding. If that’s you, I’ll help you make feeding decisions that feel supportive, never shame-based. I also show you how to supplement while protecting your breastfeeding goals, if that’s important to you.
How can I make breastfeeding work when I go back to work?
Returning to work doesn’t mean breastfeeding has to end.
I help moms create realistic pumping routines, understand milk storage, pick the right flange size, and set up a schedule that works with their job and lifestyle. I also walk through how to communicate with childcare providers so feeding feels smooth, even when you’re not there.

What if I have a preemie, twins, or a baby with medical issues?
These situations just need more individualized support and that’s exactly what I provide.
Whether your baby was early, has oral motor challenges, or you’re managing the logistics of feeding twins, I’ll help you create a feeding plan that meets your baby where they are and gives you confidence in the process.
How do I know if it’s time to start weaning and how do I do it?
There’s no one right way to wean. My job is to help you feel informed and empowered.
I walk you through all your options, explain what’s evidence-based, and help you choose what’s right for your baby and your family. Whether you’re ready to stop breastfeeding completely or just looking to make a gradual change, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

Ashley’s approach is exactly what so many moms need judgment-free, hands-on, and tailored to your unique baby and lifestyle.
And if you’re looking to capture this fleeting newborn season with ease and intention, I’d love to help. At my studio, I take care of every detail from styling to final artwork so you can focus on bonding with your baby while I handle the rest.
