3 Things to Consider Before You Hire a Newborn Photographer

Newborn

First off, congratulations!  Expecting a baby is no doubt one of the most exciting times in a couples life!  Having a newborn in your life is such a fleeting moment in time; one that is over before you know it.  And it’s a time that most parents want to document and preserve for years to come, which is why hiring a professional photographer is high on the priority list for many expectant couples.  However, finding the right photographer to capture these special moments can seem like a daunting task.  But have no fear, I’m here to help you navigate how to pick the right person for you and your family!  Read on to find my top 3 things to think about when searching for a newborn photographer.

Top 3 Things to Consider When Looking for a Newborn Photographer

1. Safety: It’s no surprise that there is an abundance of newborn photographers out there.  Just google “newborn photographers near me” and see the pages upon pages of potential photographers looking for work.  However, as stated above, not all photographers are created equal.  Working with newborns is a highly specialized field, and when handing over your most precious gift to a stranger, you want to be sure this person knows how to handle the smallest of beings.

First, find out how long this photographer has been in business.  You want a photographer who has been safely handling newborns for awhile.  A photographer who has been in business for a while will know techniques to soothe, proper room temperature to ensure the baby is comfortable, and safe ways to pose and manipulate these fragile little people.

Second, inquire about who this photographer has studied under or what professional workshops he or she has attended.  Someone who is invested in making newborn photography a career will be certified in baby CPR and will continue to educate themselves about proper posing and techniques, newborn reflexes, and any updates to newborn baby safety procedures.

While this last area is an area that is controversial, it is a topic that many parents need to consider.  While the topic of vaccines is one that many don’t wish to discuss, when it comes to your newborn, you probably want to ensure your photographer is up-to-date on vaccines.  Fresh newborns have very fragile immune systems that aren’t able to fight off common infections and the person handling your most precious child, should be as healthy as possible.  While requesting a copy of their immunization record isn’t necessary, bringing up concerns over health is one that should be discussed.

2. Style: Every photographer has their own signature style.  When searching for your newborn’s photographer, be sure to check out their online portfolios.  A photographer will have their work online in many different places, such as, website, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.  Be sure to check all social media sites to ensure you consistently like their editing style.  Newborn photographs will be mementos cherished for years to come and you want to be sure the photographer’s style is one that you will enjoy and find beauty in for years to come.

3. Cost: When you speak with potential photographers, be sure to find out what is included in the photography package that is being offered.  For many parents, newborn portraits are an investment and many people don’t have the ability to purchase extra props or accessories they want to use for their newborn.  When interviewing a photographer, see if all props and outfits that are shown in their portfolio are available to use or if you will need to provide any extras.

Finding a newborn photographer when you are expecting a baby is as necessary as finding a wedding photographer when you are getting married.  Your baby is only a newborn for a fleeting moment in time and most parent’s want to capture their child during this small moment.  However; not all newborn photographers are created equal but my above list should help in narrowing down the right photographer for you and your family!
